Tiering
A storage solution with the ability to consistently and constantly classify data and migrate it to the appropriate disk type allows organizations to more efficiently manage their disk usage. This results in a significant decrease in their year over year disk budget.
Most storage systems lack this data classification ability and force storage administrators to classify at the application level and go through the time consuming and painstaking task of manually classifying and migrating data off of expensive disk. The inevitable result is massive inefficiencies that cause the organization to purchase a large amount of high end expensive disk for data that could run just as well on lower performance inexpensive disk.
Think of it as utility based storage. Each application getting enough Tier 1, Tier 2 and Tier 3 disk assigned to it to maximize efficiencies and performance.
