Recovery Time Objective (RTO)
Your RTO is a measurement in time of how quickly you need your system back up and running. Is is critical to have everything down for no less than a few minutes, or can you live with downtime for an hour? Your RTO will determine the approach toward your needed Snapshot strategy and technology.
Recovery Point Objective (RPO)
The other measurement to determine is your RPO, or how often you want a system snapshot available. Do you need a snapshot taken every fifteen minutes because the enviornment is so dynamic, or is it ok to simply capture data once every week? Your tolerance for losing that times worth of work along with your budget for storage space will guide the end decision.
